Preventive Medicine
Naturopathic doctors are the experts in preventive medicine. (Conventional medical training focuses on intervention rather than prevention). Many patients come to our clinic because they want to live long and healthy lives, not because they are ill. Here are some examples of ways that we help them prevent future illnesses:
1. Discussion of the appropriate vitamins, minerals, and other supplements to take based on personal health issues and weaknesses, as well as family history (assessed risk factors)
2. Diet and exercise advice, based on individual parameters, for health maintenance.
3. Guided weight loss for prevention of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and other conditions. This may manifest as natural appetite suppression, allergen testing, hormone adjustment, or HCG therapy.
4. Hormone balancing for gentle entry into menopause or andropause, prevention of hormone-sensitive cancers, and other concerns; specific tests for thyroid function (basal body temperatures, free T3, free T4, and iodine tests as well as TSH) that go beyond conventional analysis to asses the most important treatments.
5. Screening tests for risk of cardiovascular disease which goes beyond conventional cholesterol testing, including c-reactive protein, LDL particle size, fibrinogen, homocysteine, and other lab parameters.
6. Screening for genetic conditions like pyroluria (which causes zinc and B vitamin deficiency and can manifest as depression and a host of other symptoms), methylation defects (which gives higher risk for certain cancers and impaired detoxification ability), and others.
At our clinic, people are empowered to make changes: knowledge is power. By discovering or uncovering specific risk factors we know what needs to change: lifestyle, habits, and/or appropriate dietary, supplement, or medicinal treatments to fix the problem.
